Retired Dracut School Teacher;



Ann Serna Casey, 89, a member of a well-known Greater Lowell family and a highly respected educator, passed away peacefully at Lowell General Hospital on Friday July 3, 2020.

She was born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 1, 1931, the daughter of the late William F. and the late Helen W. (Murningham) Casey.

A graduate of St. Michael’s Grammar school in 1946, Ann continued her education at Keith Hall, Class of 1950, Lesley College in Cambridge, Class of 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. She went on to receive her Masters in Education from Boston University in 1959.

Prior to her retirement, Ann was a school teacher in the Dracut School system having taught Kindergarten and elementary students for many years.

A devout Catholic, Ann was a communicant of St. Marguerite D’Youville Parish in Dracut, the Poor Clare Guild and also served as a recruiter, a member of the Catholic Daughters, Guild Captain and Auxiliary member with the Hudson New Hampshire Oblate Retreat House.

Active with her community, she was a member of the Dracut Library, the Dracut Friends of the Elderly and the Dracut Council on Aging.

Ann was also a member of the Massachusetts and the National Teacher’s Associations.

She is survived by her aunt Mary J. Coupe of Lowell and many beloved cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Mass to be celebrated Friday morning at ST. MARGURITE D’YOUVILLE CHURCH in DRACUT at 10 o’clock followed by her burial in St. Mary Cemetery in No. Tewksbury. E-condolences at www.odonnellfuneralhome.com.     Ann was a very special lady. I met her a few years ago when I joined the Bereavement Ministry of our parish. Over the years we became very good friends. We shared our faith and we enjoyed researching the Ancestry of our families. Through Ancestry I found out that I was 18% Irish. We laughed because I thought all of my family was French. About 4 years ago, on St Patrick's Day, a received a card in the mail and it was titled.."Happy St Patrick's Day to my Irish cousin". We laughed at that. Over the years we spoke to each other at least once a day. I spoke to her the night before she died. She told me she was going to have some blood work done. We spoke for about a half hour and then we said goodbye...nevery knowing that it was our last goodbye. Boy and I going to miss her. She was very special. She will always have a special place in my heart. Farewell my friend but not goodbye. We'll meet again.

    I have known Miss Casey since my children were in school. Not only a devoted and loving teacher but a wonderful woman. I could talk to her forever :) May she rest in peace. She will be missed!

    Miss Casey was my 1st grade teacher in 1973. She gave me such an amazing foundation for the rest of my school career. As an adult I was fortunate enough to still see her at church functions and have wonderful conversations, appreciating the teacher outside of the classroom. She was never able to convince me to call her "Ann" though! Your loss is great; may your memories bring you comfort.
